The ConsumerMan LifeSmarts Scholarship
The ConsumerMan LifeSmarts Scholarship from Herb Weisbaum is sponsored by the Herb and Debra Weisbaum Fund.
Herb Weisbaum, The ConsumerMan, is a true champion of consumer advocacy and a LifeSmarts legend. Herb is a 5-time Emmy award-winning broadcaster, and one of America’s top consumer experts. He has been protecting consumers for more than 40 years, having covered the consumer beat for CBS News, The Today Show, and NBCNews.com. Herb is currently a Contributing Editor at Checkbook.org, a unique nonprofit that helps consumers save money and make smarter choices. He hosts Checkbook’s Consumerpedia podcast and shares up-to-date consumer information at ConsumerMan.com. Herb has served as a LifeSmarts Question Master for over 26 years and is an important part of our LifeSmarts history as well as our competition.
This $1000.00 scholarship will be awarded to one graduating high school senior attending the National LifeSmarts Championship in April.
To apply:
- Applicant must create an original audio podcast and provide access to the podcast file.
- The audio podcast must feature the applicant discussing a LifeSmarts topic of their choosing.
- The podcast must be both “original” (as defined by copyright law) and unique (meaning it must have been created for the sole purpose of this scholarship).
- The scholarship applicant must be the host.
- The podcast can include an interview, but it is not required.
- Submissions must comply with the following requirements:

- Be between five (5) and eight (8) minutes in length.
- Created specifically for this scholarship application.
- Be the original work written and voiced by the applicant and other participants (if applicable) with no AI assistance.
- The audio track must be an mp3 file.
- The audio file must be uploaded by the applicant to the LifeSmarts Dropbox (we are establshing the link).
- The audio track must be named with the first initial and last name of the scholarhip applicant. (EX: JDoe.mp4)
- Must not contain material that violates or infringes another’s rights (including, but not limited to, material that violates privacy, publicity, or copyright, trademark or intellectual property rights).
- Royalty free music may be used.
5. Applicant must complete the application form below and upload audio track by the deadline of Midnight EST, March 23, 2026.
